The MQ-9 Gas Sensor Module is a high-sensitivity gas detection module designed to detect Carbon Monoxide (CO) and a variety of combustible gases, including Methane (CHβ), Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), Propane, and other flammable gases. Based on the MQ-9 Metal Oxide Semiconductor (MOS) gas sensor, the module is widely used in gas leakage detection systems, industrial safety equipment, environmental monitoring, smart home automation, and IoT-based gas monitoring applications.
The module provides both analog and digital outputs for flexible integration with embedded systems. The analog output produces a voltage proportional to the detected gas concentration, while the digital output changes state when the gas concentration exceeds a user-defined threshold set using the onboard sensitivity adjustment potentiometer. This allows the module to be used for both continuous gas concentration monitoring and simple gas leak alarm applications.

Working Principle
The MQ-9 sensor operates using Metal Oxide Semiconductor (MOS) sensing technology. The sensing element consists of a tin dioxide (SnOβ) layer that is heated to an optimal operating temperature by an internal heating element.
When Carbon Monoxide or combustible gases such as Methane, LPG, or Propane come into contact with the heated sensing surface, the electrical resistance of the sensing material changes. The magnitude of this resistance change depends on the concentration of the surrounding gas.
The onboard signal conditioning circuit converts the resistance variation into an analog voltage that can be measured by a microcontroller. An integrated comparator continuously compares the signal with a preset threshold and generates a digital HIGH or LOW output when the detected gas concentration exceeds the selected limit.
The onboard potentiometer enables easy adjustment of the detection sensitivity to match different environmental conditions and application requirements.
