MQ-8 Gas Sensor Module For Hydrogen Gas Detector Module
The MQ-8 Gas Sensor Module is a high-sensitivity gas detection module specifically designed for detecting Hydrogen (H₂) gas in the surrounding environment. Based on the MQ-8 Metal Oxide Semiconductor (MOS) gas sensor, the module provides reliable detection of hydrogen leaks and is widely used in industrial safety systems, hydrogen storage facilities, fuel cell applications, laboratories, smart home safety devices, environmental monitoring, and IoT-based gas detection projects.
Hydrogen is a highly flammable and potentially explosive gas, making early leak detection essential for maintaining safety. The MQ-8 module provides both analog and digital outputs, allowing it to be used for continuous gas concentration monitoring as well as threshold-based gas leak detection. The analog output produces a voltage proportional to the hydrogen concentration, while the digital output changes state when the gas concentration exceeds a user-defined threshold that can be adjusted using the onboard potentiometer.
Operating from a standard 5V DC supply, the MQ-8 module is fully compatible with Arduino, ESP32, ESP8266, Raspberry Pi (with an external ADC for analog readings), STM32, PIC, AVR, ATmega, NodeMCU, and other popular microcontroller platforms. Its compact PCB design, stable performance, long service life, and simple interface make it suitable for students, hobbyists, engineers, researchers, and industrial developers.
The MQ-8 sensor is commonly used in hydrogen leak detection systems, industrial monitoring equipment, fuel cell testing, laboratory experiments, safety alarms, and educational electronics projects requiring reliable hydrogen gas detection.
Working Principle
The MQ-8 operates using Metal Oxide Semiconductor (MOS) sensing technology. The sensing element contains a tin dioxide (SnO₂) layer that is heated to its operating temperature by an internal heating element.
When hydrogen gas comes into contact with the heated sensing surface, the electrical resistance of the sensing material changes. The magnitude of this resistance variation is proportional to the concentration of hydrogen gas in the surrounding air.
The onboard signal conditioning circuit converts this resistance change into an analog voltage that can be measured by a microcontroller. An integrated comparator continuously compares the sensor signal with a preset threshold and generates a digital HIGH or LOW output whenever the hydrogen concentration exceeds the selected detection level.
The onboard potentiometer allows users to adjust the sensitivity and detection threshold according to different operating environments and application requirements.

Note
The MQ-8 Gas Sensor Module is intended for hydrogen gas presence detection and relative gas concentration monitoring rather than precise quantitative gas measurement. The sensor requires an initial preheating (burn-in) period and proper calibration before use to achieve stable and reliable performance. Environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, and airflow may influence sensor readings. The module should not be used as the sole safety device in life-critical hydrogen detection systems.
