LM3914 Dot/Bar Display Driver IC (DIP-18 Package)

The LM3914 is a precision dot/bar display driver integrated circuit designed to convert analog voltage levels into a visual LED display. It is widely used for displaying signal strength, audio levels, battery charge status, and other analog measurements in a clear and easy-to-read format. The IC is housed in an 18-pin DIP package, making it suitable for breadboard and PCB-based projects.

The LM3914 works by converting an input analog voltage into a proportional output across 10 internal comparator stages. Based on the input level, it drives a series of LEDs either in dot mode (single LED indication) or bar mode (multiple LEDs lit like a bar graph). This makes it ideal for real-time visual representation of signal intensity.

Unlike linear display drivers, the LM3914 is designed for linear scale operation, making it especially useful for applications like voltage level indicators and measurement displays. It includes an internal voltage reference and a programmable current source, allowing precise control of LED brightness without external current-limiting resistors.

The IC operates with a wide range of supply voltages and supports single-supply operation. Its outputs are current-regulated open collectors, ensuring consistent LED brightness and reliable operation. It can directly interface with TTL and CMOS logic systems, making it highly versatile for embedded and electronic display applications.
