LM393 Photosensitive LDR Light-Dependent Control Sensor Module
The LDR Sensor Module is a compact and reliable light detection module designed to sense changes in ambient light intensity. It uses a Light Dependent Resistor (LDR), also known as a photoresistor, whose electrical resistance varies according to the amount of light falling on its surface. As the surrounding light intensity increases, the resistance of the LDR decreases, and as the light level decreases, its resistance increases. This characteristic allows the module to accurately detect day/night conditions and changes in ambient lighting.
The module incorporates an onboard comparator, indicator LEDs, and an adjustable sensitivity potentiometer, enabling users to set the desired light detection threshold for different applications. When the ambient light level crosses the preset threshold, the module generates a digital HIGH or LOW output signal that can directly control microcontrollers, relays, or other electronic circuits. Many versions of the module also provide an analog output that represents the relative light intensity, allowing continuous monitoring through a microcontroller's Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC).
Operating from 3.3V to 5V DC, the LDR Sensor Module is fully compatible with Arduino, ESP32, ESP8266, Raspberry Pi (with an external ADC for analog readings), STM32, PIC, AVR, NodeMCU, and other embedded development platforms. Its compact PCB design, low power consumption, and simple interface make it ideal for beginners, students, hobbyists, engineers, and professionals developing automation and sensing applications.
The module is widely used in automatic lighting systems, smart home devices, energy-saving applications, environmental monitoring, robotics, security systems, and educational electronics projects where reliable light detection is required.
Working Principle
The LDR (Light Dependent Resistor) changes its electrical resistance based on the intensity of the surrounding light. In bright conditions, the resistance decreases, while in darkness, the resistance increases.
This varying resistance forms part of a voltage divider circuit on the module. The resulting voltage is continuously monitored by the onboard comparator, which compares it against a reference voltage set using the onboard sensitivity adjustment potentiometer.
When the detected light level exceeds or falls below the selected threshold, the comparator switches the digital output accordingly. On module versions equipped with an analog output, the continuously varying voltage is also available for precise light intensity measurement through the microcontroller's ADC.
This simple operating principle enables fast, stable, and reliable light detection without requiring complex external circuitry.
