L293D IC

The L293D IC is a popular dual H-Bridge motor driver integrated circuit designed to control the direction and speed of DC motors and bipolar stepper motors using low-power control signals from microcontrollers and logic circuits. It acts as an interface between a microcontroller and a motor, allowing devices such as Arduino, Raspberry Pi (with suitable logic interface), PIC, AVR, and 8051 to drive motors that require higher current and voltage than the controller can supply directly. The L293D contains two independent H-Bridge driver circuits, enabling it to control two DC motors independently or one bipolar stepper motor with ease.

The L293D operates with a logic supply voltage of 4.5V to 7V and supports a motor supply voltage from 4.5V up to 36V. Each output channel can deliver up to 600mA continuous current with peak currents of 1.2A, making it suitable for driving small to medium-sized DC motors. One of the key advantages of the L293D is its built-in internal flyback (protection) diodes, which protect the IC from the back EMF generated by inductive loads such as motors, eliminating the need for external protection diodes.

The IC is available in a standard 16-pin DIP (Dual In-line Package), making it easy to use on breadboards, PCBs, and prototype circuits. It includes enable pins that allow PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) control for adjusting motor speed, while the input pins control the motor's direction of rotation. Its TTL and CMOS compatibility makes it easy to interface with a wide range of digital electronics.

The L293D IC is widely used in robotics, line-following robots, obstacle-avoiding robots, remote-controlled vehicles, conveyor systems, automation projects, motor control systems, embedded systems, educational kits, and DIY electronics projects.
