IR Sensor Module

The IR Sensor Module is a compact and efficient infrared-based electronic sensing device used for detecting objects, obstacles, and motion in front of the sensor. It is widely used in robotics, automation systems, smart devices, and embedded electronics projects due to its simple working principle and easy microcontroller compatibility.

This module works using an infrared transmitter (IR LED) and an infrared receiver (photodiode or phototransistor). The IR LED continuously emits invisible infrared light. When an object comes within range, the infrared light reflects back toward the receiver. The receiver detects this reflected light and converts it into an electrical signal. Based on this signal, the module generates a digital output indicating whether an object is present or not.

The output of the IR sensor is typically a digital signal (HIGH or LOW), making it very easy to interface with microcontrollers such as Arduino, ESP32, ESP8266, Raspberry Pi, and other development boards. Some versions of the module also include an onboard comparator circuit for stable and noise-free output.

The sensor also includes a sensitivity adjustment potentiometer, which allows users to fine-tune the detection range according to the application. This makes it flexible for different environments and distances. Additionally, an onboard LED indicator helps visually show detection status in real time.

Working Principle

The IR Sensor Module operates based on the principle of infrared reflection detection.

  • The IR LED emits infrared light continuously.

  • When no object is present, light is not reflected back to the receiver.

  • When an object is in range, infrared light reflects back to the sensor.

  • The receiver detects this reflected light intensity.

  • The internal circuit processes the signal and produces a digital output:

    • HIGH or LOW signal depending on detection
