DVD Motor with Long Shaft
The DVD Motor with Long Shaft is a compact, lightweight, and high-speed DC motor designed for a wide range of electronics, robotics, and mechanical applications. Originally found in DVD and optical disc drive mechanisms, this motor has become a popular choice among students, hobbyists, engineers, and makers due to its compact size, reliable performance, and versatility. The extended metal shaft provides additional mounting flexibility, making it easy to attach wheels, gears, pulleys, propellers, couplers, encoder discs, and other mechanical components without requiring extra shaft extensions.
Designed to operate on low DC voltages, typically between 3V and 6V, the motor delivers smooth rotational motion while consuming minimal power. Its compact construction allows it to fit into projects where installation space is limited, making it ideal for portable and battery-operated devices. The motor can be easily controlled using motor driver modules and microcontroller platforms such as Arduino, ESP32, ESP8266, Raspberry Pi, STM32, AVR, and PIC, enabling precise control of speed and rotation direction in various automation and robotics projects.
Manufactured with high-quality permanent magnets, precision windings, and durable metal bearings, the DVD Motor offers stable operation, low vibration, quiet performance, and a long operational life. The extended shaft design improves mechanical stability and provides additional support for securely mounting rotating components, making it suitable for applications that require accurate alignment and smooth motion.
This motor is widely used in mini robot cars, robotic arms, automatic door prototypes, conveyor belt models, educational science projects, mini cooling fans, centrifugal pumps, spinning displays, camera sliders, rotating platforms, mechanical toys, DIY automation systems, laboratory experiments, and embedded system development. It is also commonly used in STEM education, engineering workshops, and research projects to demonstrate the principles of DC motors, motion control, and electromechanical systems.
The DVD Motor with Long Shaft is an excellent component for building custom prototypes, learning motor control techniques, and developing innovative electronic and mechanical systems. Its compact size, lightweight construction, dependable performance, and ease of integration make it an essential motor for beginners and professionals alike.
Working Principle
The DVD Motor with Long Shaft operates on the principle of electromagnetic induction. When a DC voltage is applied across the motor terminals, electric current flows through the armature windings, generating a magnetic field. This magnetic field interacts with the permanent magnets inside the motor, producing rotational force (torque) that turns the motor shaft.
The commutator and brushes continuously switch the current direction within the armature coils as the shaft rotates, ensuring continuous rotation in the same direction. By reversing the polarity of the applied voltage, the motor can rotate in the opposite direction. Motor speed can also be controlled using Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) through a suitable motor driver circuit connected to a microcontroller.
The extended shaft allows easy attachment of various mechanical components, making the motor suitable for numerous motion-control applications.
