Built around the DS1307 Real Time Clock IC, the module continuously maintains the current time and date, including seconds, minutes, hours, day, date, month, and year. The module communicates with microcontrollers using the industry-standard I2C (Inter-Integrated Circuit) communication protocol, requiring only two data lines for easy integration. Working Principle
The DS1307 RTC continuously counts time using a highly stable 32.768 kHz quartz crystal oscillator. Internal registers store seconds, minutes, hours, day, date, month, and year information, while automatically managing month lengths and leap-year adjustments.
The microcontroller communicates with the RTC through the I2C interface to read or update the stored time and calendar information. When the primary 5V supply is disconnected, the backup CR2032 battery automatically powers only the RTC section, preserving the current time and calendar without requiring reconfiguration when power is restored.
The module also provides an optional programmable square-wave output that can generate timing signals for synchronization and control applications.
