CD4017 Decade Counter IC

The CD4017 Decade Counter IC is a high-performance CMOS Johnson decade counter integrated circuit that provides 10 fully decoded outputs in a standard 16-pin DIP package. It counts incoming clock pulses sequentially and activates one output at a time, making it ideal for timing, sequencing, and counting applications. The IC is widely used in digital electronics for creating LED chaser circuits, event counters, frequency dividers, and automatic sequence controllers.

The CD4017 operates by advancing its active output on every rising edge (LOW-to-HIGH transition) of the clock signal. It features ten decoded outputs (Q0 to Q9), with only one output remaining HIGH at any given time while all others remain LOW. After reaching the tenth count (Q9), the counter automatically resets and starts the counting sequence again from Q0, enabling continuous decade counting without additional logic.

Designed using CMOS technology, the CD4017 offers low power consumption, excellent noise immunity, and reliable operation over a wide supply voltage range of 3V to 15V. The IC includes a Clock Enable input that allows the counting process to be paused without affecting the current output state, and an asynchronous Reset input that immediately returns the counter to its initial state (Q0 HIGH), regardless of the clock signal.

The CD4017 is easy to interface with microcontrollers, timers such as the 555 Timer IC, and other digital logic devices. It is commonly used in LED sequencing, automation systems, digital counters, embedded systems, robotics, Arduino projects, and educational electronics due to its simple operation and versatile functionality.
