CD4017 - Decade Counter IC

The CD4017 is a CMOS decade counter and decoded Johnson counter IC designed for counting and sequencing applications. It features 10 decoded output pins (Q0 to Q9), with only one output remaining HIGH at a time. The active output advances sequentially with each rising edge of the clock input. After reaching the tenth count (Q9), the counter automatically resets and starts again from Q0, making it ideal for divide-by-10 counting and sequential control circuits.

The CD4017 operates over a wide supply voltage range of 3V to 15V, providing flexibility for battery-powered as well as standard electronic systems. Built using CMOS technology, it offers low power consumption, high noise immunity, and reliable operation. The IC also includes a clock enable input for pausing the counting sequence and a reset input for returning the counter to the initial state at any time.

With its simple operation and decoded outputs, the CD4017 is widely used in LED chasers, event counters, frequency dividers, timing circuits, sequence controllers, digital displays, automation systems, and educational electronics projects.
