The 74LS85 is a high-speed 4-bit Magnitude Comparator IC designed to compare two 4-bit binary or BCD numbers and determine their relative values. It compares two parallel 4-bit inputs, A0–A3 and B0–B3, where A3 and B3 are the most significant bits (MSBs). The IC provides three comparison outputs indicating whether A is greater than B (A>B), A is less than B (A<B), or A is equal to B (A=B).

The 74LS85 is not limited to binary data and can also compare other monotonic codes such as BCD, making it suitable for a wide variety of digital logic applications. It includes three cascade (expander) inputs that allow multiple comparator ICs to be connected together for comparing numbers larger than 4 bits without requiring additional external logic gates. This makes it ideal for building high-bit-width comparison circuits in digital systems.
