Working Principle

The 4x3 Matrix Keypad operates using a row-column scanning technique. Internally, the keys are arranged in a matrix of rows and columns, where each key connects a specific row line to a column line.

When a key is pressed, it electrically connects one row to one column, completing a circuit. The microcontroller continuously scans the rows and columns by setting rows as outputs and columns as inputs (or vice versa), detecting which key has been pressed based on the active circuit connection.

This scanning process allows the system to identify all 12 keys using only 7 microcontroller pins (4 rows + 3 columns), significantly reducing GPIO usage compared to individual button wiring.

Debouncing techniques are often used in software to eliminate false or repeated key detections caused by mechanical contact bounce.
