It safeguards the battery pack against overcharging, over-discharging, over-current, short circuits, and cell voltage imbalance, ensuring safe operation and extending battery life. It is widely used in battery packs, portable power systems, electric bicycles, robotics, solar energy storage, UPS systems, LED lighting, IoT devices, and DIY electronics projects.
The protection board consists of a Battery Management IC (BMS controller), MOSFET switching transistors, voltage sensing circuits, current sensing components, balancing circuitry (on balance versions), PCB, and battery connection terminals. These components work together to continuously monitor the voltage and current of each battery cell, protecting the battery pack from unsafe operating conditions.
The working principle of the 3S 12V 18650 10A BMS is based on continuous monitoring of each battery cell in the pack. The board measures the voltage of all three lithium-ion cells and controls the charging and discharging process. During charging, if any cell reaches the maximum safe voltage (typically 4.2V), the BMS disconnects the charger or balances the cells (if balance charging is supported). During discharge, if any cell voltage drops below the safe cut-off level (typically 2.7–3.0V), the BMS disconnects the load to prevent deep discharge. The board also disconnects the battery pack if excessive current or a short circuit is detected, protecting both the batteries and the connected equipment.
