ACS712 30A Current Sensor Module

The ACS712 30A Current Sensor Module is a high-performance Hall-effect current sensing module designed to accurately measure both AC and DC current up to ±30A. Built around the Allegro ACS712 Hall-effect current sensor IC, the module provides a linear analog voltage output that is directly proportional to the current flowing through its internal conductor. Because it uses Hall-effect technology, the sensor provides electrical isolation between the high-current path and the low-voltage measurement circuitry, making it a safe and reliable solution for current monitoring applications.

The module is ideal for measuring current in power supplies, battery charging systems, solar energy systems, inverters, motor controllers, industrial automation equipment, and embedded electronics projects. It can be easily connected to analog input pins of microcontrollers such as Arduino, ESP32, ESP8266, STM32, PIC, AVR, NodeMCU, Raspberry Pi (with an external ADC), and PLC systems for real-time current measurement and monitoring.

Its compact PCB design, low power consumption, high accuracy, and fast response time make the ACS712 30A module suitable for both hobby and professional applications. Unlike traditional current sensing methods that require shunt resistors, the ACS712 measures current without introducing significant power loss while maintaining excellent electrical isolation for enhanced system safety.

The module supports bidirectional current measurement, allowing it to detect both positive and negative current flow. This makes it particularly useful in battery-powered systems, regenerative circuits, and renewable energy applications where current may flow in either direction.

Working Principle

The ACS712 operates using the Hall Effect. When electrical current flows through the module's internal low-resistance copper conductor, it generates a magnetic field proportional to the current. The integrated Hall-effect sensor detects this magnetic field and converts it into a corresponding analog voltage.

At zero current, the output voltage is approximately half of the supply voltage (around 2.5V when powered with 5V). As positive current increases, the output voltage rises above the midpoint. When current flows in the opposite direction, the output voltage decreases below the midpoint.

The analog output is read by the microcontroller's Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC), where software calculates the actual current value using the sensor's known sensitivity of approximately 66 mV/A.

This non-contact sensing method provides excellent electrical isolation, low insertion loss, and accurate real-time current monitoring.
