Alcohol Sensing Alert with Engine Locking
This project is designed to detect alcohol consumption by the driver and prevent the vehicle from starting when alcohol is detected. An alcohol sensor continuously checks the air near the driver. If the alcohol level exceeds the predefined limit, the system activates an alert and locks the engine. This helps reduce the risk of accidents caused by drunk driving.
The system uses an alcohol sensor such as the MQ-3 to detect alcohol vapours. A microcontroller processes the sensor reading and compares it with a preset threshold value. When the detected alcohol concentration is within the safe range, the engine-starting circuit remains enabled. When alcohol is detected above the limit, the system activates a buzzer or warning indicator and disables the engine-starting circuit using a relay.
The main components used in this project are a microcontroller, MQ-3 alcohol sensor, relay module, buzzer, LED indicators, LCD display, and suitable power supply. The relay is connected to the engine-starting control circuit so that the microcontroller can prevent engine starting when an unsafe alcohol level is detected.
The project can also display the alcohol detection status on an LCD. The display can show messages such as "Alcohol Not Detected", "Alcohol Detected", "Engine Locked", or the sensor value.
The system works automatically after power-on. The alcohol sensor measures the surrounding air and sends the detected value to the microcontroller. The controller compares the value with the programmed threshold. If the value is below the threshold, the system allows engine operation. If the value exceeds the threshold, the buzzer is activated, the warning LED turns on, and the engine-locking relay prevents the vehicle from starting.
This project is useful for demonstrating vehicle safety systems, alcohol detection, embedded systems, automation, and accident-prevention technology. It can be used as an educational prototype for engineering and student projects. A real vehicle implementation should be designed and installed by a qualified automotive professional so that the engine-control and electrical systems remain safe.
